Kaytranada - Chances (Andrew Goodwin Analysis)
Analysing my music video using the Andrew Goodwin Technique
I decided to make my music video a narrative based one to the song Chances by Kaytranada. Throughout the music video we get introduced with the main female character and we see her get influenced by her friend to do things that she wouldn't normally do - skip lesson, smoke cigarettes and take pills.
1. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, with the visualS illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
When it comes to the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, I would say that there is a clear and direct relationship between the two but a very basic one. Throughout the music video we get scenes where the actor lip syncs the lyrics to the character. With the influence of the her friend to do bad things we can also see the relationship with the lyrics and visuals. 'Ill take my chances on the road' this can be linked to her doing bad things and just taking her chances to see what happens. Due to the basic relation between the lyrics and visuals, there's only a certain amount it can do, but I do think that it does amplify the lyrics really well.
The lyrics of the song have an apathetic type vibe to them. Throughout the video we get shown good times and good moments - the dance/rave scene where everyone is having a good time dancing, jumping around. The song does sound a little old, early to mid 2000's, the way we achieved this look is by using a filter in post-production which gives the music video an 'old camera' look. We did this as we think this was the most suitable look and feel for the music video and lyrics.
2. There is a relationship between the music and visuals, with the visual illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
When it comes to the relationship between the music and visuals, I would say that we paid a lot of attention to the music itself and the feel of it. The whole song itself is about being apathetic and not caring about anything as well as good times and vibes. As a whole, we decided to take this idea of being apathetic and made our actors do things they normally wouldn't - take pills, smoke cigarettes and even skip lesson.
During the procession of the music video you can tell that it is in sync and in time with any beat drop or any moments. I made this decision, like everyone else in the group, as I wanted to amplify the feel of the music video and the song itself. Unfortunately, the thing that we didn't do is, we didn't make the videos contradictory to the lyrics or the music instead we made it narrative based on our own little story.
3. Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography.
When it comes to the genes and the complexity and diversity in terms of music video style and iconography, we worked hard to come with conventions such as girls, men, fast pace and loads other. We did this so that it worked well with the genre of the music video, Chances by Kaytranada, which was R&B/Soul. I personally think that in the first half of our music video, it doesn't stick to any of the topic convections of the genres. Whereas, in the second half during the dance/ rave scene it started to feel a lot faster paced and there was also both genders of men and women dancing.
4. Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of their star/performers.
During the shoot of the music video, we paid attention to the close ups of the star/performer. This links well to Goodwin's fourth idea where record companies will demand a lot of these close ups. We didn't intend to do it for this reason alone, but also to create intimate feeling moments with the main actor as well as amplifying the idea of being in her head. We also made sure that all of our close up were either of the face or feet not of any body part that would cause any sort of discomfort for the actor or any of the viewers, as some of these close up can be thought to seen as objectifying the person.
5. Voyeurism
When it comes to voyeurism, which is the practice of spying on people engaged in intimate behaviour, me managed to achieve a little bit of this in our music video. The only place and time we achieved and created the idea of voyeurism is when the main characters friend was giving her drugs to do, which is something that people don't like being watched whilst they do as it is illegal.
6. There are likely to be intertextual references to other music videos, TV shows, books, movies, games etc.
Goodwins final idea is the intertexual reference to other music videos, TV Shows, books, movies games etc. With our music video, we didn't make any direct reference to other sources. However, one of our ideas, dance scene, was heavily inspired by a Netflix show called 'White lines'. We did want to make it our own in some way so we did try and take some ideas from it but still make it original and have our own ideas in it too.
